The European COPD Coalition is a not-for-profit association committed to raising awareness about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD) and its social and economic impacts among European policy makers and stakeholders, seeking ways to reduce the burden of the disease through collective action and advocacy, developing and implementing a comprehensive EU public health policy on COPD and by being a key facilitator of COPD policy initiatives at European and country level.
The Association’s mission is to conquer the myths and misunderstandings around COPD and work with multiple stakeholders to improve COPD prevention, diagnosis and the quality and provision of COPD care across the European Union. In order to do so, the Association will help collectively push forward boundaries which currently exist in understanding, experiencing, and treating COPD. The Association will aim at finding common agendas among industry and non-industry partners where energy and resources can be combined to prevent COPD, improve patient care, thereby recognizing that people at risk, patients and healthcare systems would benefit from improved awareness, COPD patient diagnosis, review, management and prevention. As such, the Association aims to provide COPD with the recognition it deserves across Europe as an illness in its own right.
The European COPD Coalition envisions a near future where…
- patients living with COPD in Europe are relieved from the burden of the disease through high quality care, and are able to lead more productive lives both in the work place and with their families;
- care-givers of people living with COPD are better enabled to support patients;
- policy makers are committed to the implementation of a comprehensive policy to tackle the disease;
- there is a harmonised research framework across Europe to improve our understanding of the disease and its translation into patient’s benefits.
The European COPD Coalition is the only organisation in the Eurpean Union solely dedicated to COPD, bringing together all interested parties to act upon the COPD spread. ECC is an alliance formed to build the momentum and bring continuity to COPD related activities at the European level.
The not-for-profit association was funded by the European Respiratory Society (ERS), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Pfizer and Boehringer Ingelheim.
