On 6 and 7 September 2013, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Lung Foundation (ELF) organised a big scale free spirometry event on one of the major square of Barcelona, on the occasion of ERS annual congress.
With the support of the football club, FC Barça, the EU campaign “ExSmokers are unstoppable” and the European COPD Coalition, the two organisations offered the public the opportunity to “score a goal” for lung health by participating in a free lung test. More than ten posts were available all day long for visitors to take a spirometry test and get information on COPD. As a result, 1255 people had their lung tested. This event helped raised awareness on lung health and on the importance of early diagnosis.
In addition, visitors had a chance to sign up to the ‘Quit Smoking With Barça’ programme; a unique smoking cessation programme developed by FC Barcelona and the European Commission (EC), which is helping more than 60,000 smokers across Europe stop smoking.
ECC is proud to have supported this initiative.
